Reasons I'm super stoked about #IndieBookfest2015...and you should be too!

For starters, the name pretty much says it all:

Indie - As in independent. Doing their own thing. In control of their own destiny - that shit's exciting right there!

Book - Oh the many wonderful things I could say here...but I'll limit myself to thee awesome quotes:

"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
― Jorge Luis Borges

“There is no friend as loyal as a book.”
― Ernest Hemingway

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
― Stephen King,

And, of course, FEST - festival, gala, party, celebration - you get the picture!

But, let's move on to my actual list of reasons...

1. I get to see a ton of my bookish friends in person (AKA - readers, writers and bloggers galore)!! This is huge since they spend most of the year trapped in an alternate dimension most people refer to as Facebook...but on Friday, they're all just going to start showing up...

2. Then, there's the panels. THREE DAYS of panels talking about anything and everything book related! So much to learn, so much to share :-D

3. FANFARE which is a fun word for LOTS OF FREE SWAG!!! Seriously. An entire portion of the day is devoted to hanging out with tons of awesome authors and having them hand you gifts.

Yes. Really.

4. Did I mention the parties?? Yup! Parties. MULTIPLE! And I don't know about everyone else, but I'm planning on getting my dance on...

5. Let's see. Oh right...BOOK SIGNING with like, a gazillion awesome authors (okay, that's not the actual number) writing all different genres...and cover models. That's right...men...abs. Need I say more?

That's what I thought...

Mind you, this is just the short list...there are a slew of other reasons why I'm bursting at the seams to get there, but I'm thinking many of those will just be fun for me (because I'm weird...not because I'm special)

Meanwhile, if you're feeling like this...and I know that you are...

Snag your ticket here and come and play!!

We'd love to see you  - ♥ -

Strong Female Characters and the Importance of Roosters...

Let me begin this post by saying that my friend has chickens. Lots of them. Then, allow me to add chickens are surprisingly (well, to me anyway) interesting creatures.

No, really.

Anywho, one of the things I've learned about chickens, is the importance of the rooster. Sure, the hens do all the serious work, laying eggs and all, but the rooster is so much more than the annoying crow that wakes you up come sunrise. He is selfless and self-sacrificing. Willing to die for his flock without hesitation or second thought. But...he needs the flock to become said hero. Without it...he's just another selfish, cocky bastard every self-respecting hen would kick to the curb.

True that! But I'm going to stop talking about chickens now.

So, here's the thing that's been on my mind since I heard about the rooster's knight in shining armor ways...Well, one of the things...the thing that pertains to writing and reading about male and female characters.

For starters, if you've ever read any of my books, you probably know that I don't do the damsel in distress thing...well, I may do the damsel in distress thing, because we all thrive on drama, but my damsels can handle their own shit and are perfectly capable of fixing their own distress.

Having said that, I still want a hero who will swoop in on his proverbial white horse and save the day.

It's true. I like to write me a rooster. A strong, self-less, self-sacrificing, force-you-back-into-the-coop-to-fight-the-Hawk-himself, rooster.

Bring on the macho, the manly, the protective and the caveman I'm-gonna-beat-his-ass-if-he-touches-my-girl-attitude. I'm down. I don't care who you are, that shit's sexy as hell. Provided he's doing it for the right reasons. Because he wants to. Even though he knows she doesn't need him to. And yeah, there's a difference. One I pay close attention to when I write. One I'm well aware of when I read.

Submissive chicks aren't my thing (pun intended). But you don't need to have a weak female to write a strong, alpha male. You just need to find the balance. Define the roles. Because they exist for a reason. In nature and in fiction.

Chickens. You can learn a lot from them.

*****UNTIL IT'S NOT is a Short Story intended to compliment the novel WITH WHOM WE SPEND OUR LIVES***** It's been five years since I've seen him. Five years of growing up and growing apart. But every second we've spent separated by time and distance will disappear the second I see him. The second I feel his touch. He's mine. I'm his. And nothing and no one will ever be able to change that. I may be young. And I may not know much of anything...but I know him, and therefore I know at least one thing for sure: Love is EVERYTHING in this life.

Breathless, from nerves and the way my heart is expanding in my chest and crushing my lungs, I come to a stop within a few feet of where he stands. He’s so focused on scanning the sandy seaweed at his feet for turtle shells, he hasn’t even noticed me yet.

I swallow several times, trying to will my vocal chords back into existence. Finally, I find them.

“Hey.” Not as poignant a first statement as I’d hoped to make, but it’s enough.

Before he even moves his head to look at me, I know that he’s recognized the sound of my voice.

“Pickle.” No trace of a question in his tone. Just that same ridiculous nickname he stuck me with when I was fourteen and hated the idea of being called ‘babe’ or ‘baby’, or anything even remotely generic. So, I got Pickle. A name I hated even more. Until I loved it because he loved me, and hearing him call me Pickle was like hearing the words ‘I love you’ every time.

For a long moment, we just stand there, staring back and forth, our eyes locked onto each other’s souls and seeing everything we already know is there, but had to go without all this time we spent apart.

Then, without uttering a single word, we both come together in one fluid motion, his arms wrapping around my waist, pressing my body to his while my hands reach up and run through his thick, dark hair. It’s still soft and curls at the ends. He needs a haircut. He always needs a haircut.

My eyes flutter shut just as his lips sink into mine and finally, I’m home.

Dog Lover who likes her pastries full of cream and sugar….oh…and I write some ;-)
Aside from being an author, I am also a mom to a beautiful 5 year old little girl. I tell everyone I named her after my great-grandmother (because that’s the mature answer), but really, I named her after my favorite princess – just so happens I got lucky and they had the same name…If I wasn’t a writer, I would work on a horse ranch – I’m an animal lover (in addition to dogs, horses are at the top of my list). I wear flip-flops pretty much everywhere I go. I would rather stay awake until 5 am than get up at 5 am (years of bar tending have left their mark), if I can, I’m going to the beach AND I will always be nice to people who bring me chocolate…or coffee…if you bring me both, I’ll probably love you forever.A gypsy at heart, I write the way I live, following the story wherever it may lead, always ready to start the next one. This is clearly reflected in my body of work which to date includes everything from Children’s Lit to Thrillers.

I happily reside in sunny Florida (for now) and always enjoy hearing from fellow readers!!
